LILA MAE WATSON CAMPAIGN
For this project, I had to choose a character from literature and brand a campaign to them. My candidate, Lila Mae Watson from The Intuitionists novel written by Colson Whitehead, is an elevator inspector running for the Elevator Guild President. For this project, I branded her campaign, created an original logo, and created collateral pieces that included: a poster, door hanger, a three-piece magazine series, buttons, business cards, and I branded her speech. I also created a separate website branded to this campaign that shows all my collateral pieces. Additionally, I took all the photos of Lila Mae Watson.
The challenge this project presented was designing a campaign that would have existed in 1968 when my candidate ran. To solve this, I stuck to a simple design and primarily used only two colors as printing was still limited in the 1960s. I got most of my inspiration from Shirley Chisholm's 1972 campaign for president. She used, like many other campaigns at the time, bold sans serif fonts paired with strong slab serif fonts. I used this pairing to reflect the style of design back then in my branding.
